Abstract

311,689. Tar & Petroleum Process Co., (Assignees of Knowles, A. S., and Andrews, C. W.). May 14, 1928, [Convention date.]. Materials for making coke; oil gas.-Oils &c. are cracked, and a metallurgical coke obtained, by depositing the oils in small quantities in a closed chamber on a solid surface externally heated to a coking temperature until a solid layer of coke is formed. The liquid material passes from a header 27, Fig. 1, through nozzle tubes 28 into chambers 24 containing baskets 26 preferably filled with loose coke &c. when the lighter fractions are distilled off. The residual liquid falls thence on to the heated floor 39 of a heating chamber of aluminium oxide brick or refractory glass, a rotary basket 30 containing loose coke &c. being in some cases interposed through the axle of which steam or gas may be introduced through a pipe 19. The volatile products pass off by a pipe 29 to a condenser and a fractionating tower. Regenerators 45 and 46 are located below combustion flues 40 which are, provided at the ends with burner nozzles 41, 42. Alternatives to the basket 30 are shown in Figs. 5 and 9 consisting of a rotating corrugated cylinder 71, Fig. 5, containing coke &c., and baffle plates 123, Fig. 9. Apparatus is described for removing the coke.
