Abstract

In the chlorination of benzene by passing its vapour mixed with hydrogen chloride and oxygen, with or without nitrogen, steam or other diluents, over catalysts at elevated temperatures not exceeding 300 DEG C., the catalysts contain, besides copper, one or more metals of groups 3-8 of the periodic system. Preferably the metals or their compounds are precipitated on a carrier having a large surface area. Examples describe the use of the following catalysts: (1) silica gel impregnated with copper chloride and cobalt chloride; (2) kieselguhr impregnated with copper chloride and nickel chloride; (3) active carbon impregnated with copper chloride and manganese chloride; (4) aluminium hydroxide impregnated with copper chloride and cerium chloride; (5) the product obtained by acidifying with hydrochloric acid a solution containing sodium aluminate, copper chloride and iron chloride; (6) Florida earth impregnated with copper chloride and iron chloride. Chromium is also specified as a constituent of the catalysts and pumice as a carrier.ALSO:Chlorobenzene is manufactured by passing a mixture of benzene vapour, hydrogen chloride and oxygen, with or without admixed steam, nitrogen or other diluent, at a raised temperature not exceeding 300 DEG C. and preferably between 150 DEG and 300 DEG C., over a catalyst containing, besides copper, one or more metals of groups 3-8 of the periodic system. Preferably the metals or their compounds are precipitated on a carrier having a large surface area. In examples, mixtures of benzene vapour, air and hydrogen chloride (in 1, 2, 3, and 6) or the vapour of aqueous hydrochloric acid (in 4 and 5) are passed over: (1) silica gel impregnated with copper chloride and cobalt chloride, at 180 DEG C.; (2) kieselguhr impregnated with copper chloride and nickel chloride, at 190 DEG C.; (3) active carbon impregnated with copper chloride and manganese chloride, at 200 DEG C.; (4) aluminium hydroxide impregnated with copper chloride and cerium chloride at 200 DEG C.; (5) the product obtained by acidifying with hydrochloric acid a solution containing sodium aluminate, copper chloride and iron chloride, at 200 DEG C.; (6) Florida earth impregnated with copper chloride and iron chloride, at 200 DEG C. Chromium is also specified as a constituent of the catalysts and pumice as a carrier.
