[Class 78 (iii).] Gear for moving boiler chimneys or the like of the kind in which the chimney &c. is carried towards its lower end on a pivoted arm, comprises a floating lever pivoted at one end to the chimney, a fulcrum about which the lever pivots and at the same time moves as a whole, and a rope or other mechanism acting on the free end of the lever to effect and control the movement thereof. The chimney A is pivoted at A<2> by means of arms A<1> carrying semicircular cams C. Pivotally connected to the chimney near the centre of gravity is one end of a floating lever comprising two arms D having shoulders D<3> and connected together at one end by a transverse rod D<2> carrying pulleys F. To raise the chimney from the inoperative position shown in full lines, the floating lever is raised by means of ropes E fastened at one end to the boiler and passing round the pulleys F and fixed pulleys F<1>, the shoulders D<3> of the lever moving between guides G on the boiler. When the pulleys F approach the pulleys F<1> the centre of gravity of the chimney is substantially over the pivot A<2> and the momentum carries it into the position shown by the chain lines. In this position the lever is fulcrumed on the cams C, the weight of the chimney at one end tending to raise the pulleys F away from the pulleys F<1> and by slackening the ropes E the chimney may be lowered under control on to its seating A<3>. The removal of the chimney is effected by pulling the ropes until the pulleys F, F<1> approach. Momentum will carry the centre of gravity of the chimney to the other side of the pivot A<2> and a slackening of the ropes allows the chimney to be lowered into its operative position.
