Abstract

362,090. Mould and core materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Earl, R. ; 1003, Parkway, Utica, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 15, 1930, No. 30903. Convention date, Jan. 17. [Class 83 (i).] Cores and moulds are made of a finely-divided refractory material, a resinous condensation product being employed as binder. A suitable binder comprises a resin of the alkyd class, formed by the combination of a polyhydric alcohol and a polybasic acid, such as glycerine and phthalic acid or its anhydride, together with monobasic acids derived from linseed, castor, or other vegetable oils, to which a vegetable oil such as chinawood oil may be added. The alcohol and acid may in part be replaced by any other polyhydric or monohydric alcohol, such as glycol, and a natural resin, respectively. Other methods of preparing the binder are by associating a vegetable oil with an alkyd resin, or by replacing the drying oil acid of the composition of Specification 284,349, [Class 95, Paints &c.], in part by chinawood oil, and by rosin. Suitable solvents are naphtha, toluol, acetone, denatured alcohol, or a mixture of equal proportions of kerosene and coal tar distillates containing toluol, xylol, naphtha, and some tar and naphthalene. A cereal binder such as flour, or that sold under the registered Trade Mark " Mogul " may be added. A suitable material such as sand, zirconia, or alumina is mixed with the binder and baked at 350‹ F. to drive off the solvent. A facing of silica sand, prefired graphite, or fine carbon bonded with clay may be applied to the core by spraying a suspension thereof in a solution of an alkyd resin on the surface, or otherwise. Previously used sand may be employed in making the mould.
