Abstract

361,355. Television. WILLIAMS, W. E., 13, Ethelbert Road, Bromley, Kent. Aug. 19, 1930, No. 24843. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii).] A television receiver comprises a plurality of glow discharge lamps 19, having a threshold operating characteristic, in which one pole of all the lamps in each horizontal row is connected to a channel 22 and the other pole of all the lamps in each vertical row is connected to a channel 21. When a lamp is energized from the corresponding channels 21, 22, the potential applied to neighbouring lamps through " back circuits " is insufficient to light them. The lamps preferably have three electrodes, the middle one 27, Fig. 2, being earthed. The lamps in each vertical row are preferably contained in a single envelope 20. The channels 21, 22 are connected to distributers 13, 14, which are either synchronized with, or form part of, the transmitter. For wireless transmission the channels corresponding to the circuits 21, 22 are accommodated within a narrow wave band by the use of selective systems as disclosed in Specifications 325,232, [Class 40 (v), Wireless signalling &c.], and 344,869. According to the Provisional Specification, filament lamps may be used in place of glow discharge lamps, switches being suitably energized to open the circuits of neighbouring lamps shunting the lamp to be lit. At the transmitter, two cells may be used, each illuminated by the same elemental area of the object, one being rapidly connected to each of the channels 22 while the other is more slowly connected to each of the channels 21. Alternatively, a row and a column of cells may be used, each cell in the row being connected to a channel 22 and each cell in the column being connected to a channel 21, and the exploring device exposes the appropriate pair of cells to an elemental area of the object, thus energizing the appropriate channel. Specification 302,187, [Class 40 (iii), Telegraphs, Electric], is referred to.
