Abstract

360,849. Flexible couplings for transmitting rotary motion. KJAER, V. A., 16, Hoyensgade, Copenhagen. Aug. 7, 1930, No. 23616. [Class 80 (ii).] A resilient coupling for connecting an internalcombustion engine to a rotary machine, such as an electrical power unit, pump, or blower, .and absorbing torsional vibration consists of one or more long circularly-bent coil springs inserted between abutments on concentric coupling elements and enclosed in an annular cavity formed by and between the elements, one of which is connected to its transmission member by a spring-loaded friction coupling adapted to slip at a predetermined load, as at starting or when passing through resonant speeds. Weak springs 5, guided by shoes 17 in a cavity 4 of circular cross section in the engine-shaft member 3, bear through pads 6 on wedge-shaped thrust members 7, 8, which interfit and are mounted as shown in Fig. 1, so that the springs are compressed for both directions of drive. The driven member 10 has projections 18 coacting with projections 19 on the driving casing 3 to limit the spring stress, and is formed double-conical to coact with friction cones 12, which are keyed to the loose driven chainwheel 14 and are pressed by adjustable springs 15.
