360,674. Dies for making tiles. ASHWORTH, J. H. and WOODS TILERIES (HANLEY), Ltd., Nile Works, Derby Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Nov. 8, 1930, No. 33654. [Class 87 (ii).] The rear faces of tiles are undercut by means of beveledged sliding plates b2 which are connected to spring- controlled sliding members b limited in movement by screws d. When the annular die X is lowered over the fixed pillar 3, the members bare forced into their recesses, thereby moving the plates b<2> outwards. An upper die then is lowered to shape and compress the tile. When the lower die is raised by means of the shaft 9 to deliver the moulded tile, the plates b<2> move inwardly to clear the undercut surfaces as soon as the die clears the pillar. A valve 10 with a loosely-fitting stem 11 is mounted in the pillar and is raised by suction on the delivery stroke to release the air imprisoned round the moulded article. In the illustrated apparatus four members b are employed each at right-angles to the next and the bevelled edges of the plates co-operate to form a square recess.
