Abstract

D. ; 2331, North 58th Street, Philadelphia, both in U.S.A.) June 26, 1930, No. 19486. Convention date, Feb. 13. [Class 130.] Tobacco in hands supported from their butts alone is conditioned by exposure to a humid atmosphere of lower temperature than that of the atmosphere in which the tobacco is subsequently manufactured. The endless-band conveyer g is provided with a number of spring clips and holders p for the hands of tobacco. The conditioned air is distributed through pipes u placed over and above the top and bottom runs of the conveyer bands. The tobacco hands, which are opened and closed as they are alternately inverted, are further treated at w. Automatic means for varying the humidity of the air comprises roller m, Fig. 6, which is subjected to the weight of the hands and is counterbalanced by the weight 4 and controls a valve s in the air-supply conduit. Alternatively, a valve 5, Fig. 5, in the water-supply pipe is controlled by solenoids 8, 9 in circuits which are opened and closed by a balanced lever 13 one arm of which carries a hand of tobacco the weight of which varies in accordance with the humidity of the chamber in which the tobacco is conditioned. The temperature of the conditioning room is about 65‹ F. compared with 70‹ F. in the manufacturing room.
