Abstract
Animal or vegetable oils or other esters of fatty acids are incorporated in solutions of cellulose acetate or other organic derivatives of cellulose such as cellulose ethers, and the solutions so obtained employed in the manufacture of filaments, yarns, ribbons, films, &c. Suitable oils are olein, stearin, and particularly olive oil. The solutions preferably contain a common solvent for the cellulose derivative and the fatty acid ester. The yarns, bristles, straws, films, &c., possess an even lustre and an enhanced toughness and pliability, and yarns so made may be twisted to a much greater extent and they may be more closely knitted. In examples, to solutions of cellulose acetate in aqueous acetone and acetone-alcohol there is added 10 per cent of the weight of cellulose acetate of olive oil, and the solution employed for spinning either by dry or wet methods.
