Abstract
359,420. Electromagnetic switches. WEST & CO., Ltd., A., Lewes Road, Brighton, and BREEZE, V., Nestor, The Avenue, Kingston, near Lewes, Sussex. July 21, 1930, No. 31930/29. [Class 38 (v).] The armature of an electromagnetic contactor is secured to its carrier in such a manner that it has a limited amount of universal motion thereon to enable it to align itself with the pole faces of the relatively fixed magnet, the carrier itself having a similar mounting upon its pivoting support. As shown in Fig. 2 the carrier 5 is mounted loosely upon its pivot pin 13 and normally rests against the stop 8. It carries contact fingers 7 brought into engagement with corresponding fixed contacts on attraction of the armature 3 to the pole faces of the core 1 due to energization of the coil 2. The armature 3 as shown in Fig. 3 consists of two sets of laminations 3a secured between an inner plate 9 and an outer pair of plates 10. The armature is mounted at its centre of gravity on a pin 12 secured between the two flanges of the carrier 5 the hole for the pin 12 in the inner plate being a relatively close fit and the holes in the outer plates a relatively loose fit. Thus the armature on attraction has a limited universal motion to enable it to align itself with the pole faces of the magnet 1, this alignment being further assisted by the loose pivotal mounting of the armature carrier. Two air gaps 14 are formed in the core 1 to prevent residual magnetism. To prevent distortion of the core 1 during mounting, the magnet 1 is mounted in position in the manner described in Specification 347,751, the side-plates 4 between which its laminations are secured being pivoted about the axis X on the pin 13 and also pivoted universally about a point Y.
