Abstract

359,394. Electrodeposition of alloys. COLE, W. H., Hotel Majestic, Avenue Kleber, Paris. May 14, 1930, Nos. 14868/30, 19959/30, 37794/30, and 1743/31. [Class 41.] Articles of iron, steel, or other metal are coated with an alloy using anodes of the several metals disposed at distances from the cathode and from one another which are adjusted in accordance with the particular metal and the desired proportion thereof in the alloy. In the cell shown, the articles 3 are suspended from a rod 2 while anodes in the form of narrow rods of copper, zinc, and cadmium are suspended from rods 4, 6, 8 respectively, preferably in staggered formation. The rods are mounted in insulating supports 10 and are adjustable. The current through each electrode is adjustable by a rheostat and is indicated by an ammeter. Dimensions are given. An alloy containing copper, zinc, and cadmium in the ratio 3:5:7 may be deposited from an electrolyte containing the metals in this proportion. The electrolyte may be prepared by preliminary anodic solution of the metals in a potassium cyanide bath containing a small amount of sodium hydroxide, or by dissolving the sulphates in potassium cyanide solution. In the final stage of the process, insoluble anodes may be substituted for those of the various metals. Molybdenum, cobalt, and nickel may be deposited as constituents of a cadmium alloy. Chromium may be deposited as a chief constituent of the alloy or as an outer coating over another alloy.
