Abstract
359,019. Spray carburetters. MANNERS, W. H., 26, Dingaan Street, Krugersdorp, Transvaal, BARKER, N., 7, Trust Buildings, Fox Street, and M. & S. CARBURETTOR MANUFACTURING & FINANCE CORPORATION, Ltd., 86, Main Street, both in Johannesburg, both in South Africa. July 14, 1930, No. 21266. [Class 7 (iii).] The fuel supply is controlled by a tubular member 6 having a narrow longitudinal slit 8 and a rotatable valve comprising two parts 9, 10 housed within it, the part 9 having a helical edge 11 which coacts with the slit so that equal angular movements of the valve open or close equal portions of the length of the slit. Fuel from a float chamber passes through a passage 19 into an orifice 20 in a boss 5, and through a plug 7 to the lower end of the member 6. A fine slit 15 extends upwards from the edge of the helical part 11 to promote the flow of petrol by capillary action. The elements 9, 10 are rotated by a lever 26 provided with set-screws 28 which determine the setting of the lever 26 relative to the helical edge 11. The lever 26 is connected by a link 31 with other levers 45, 62; thus the air-admission and mixture-outlet valves 42, 59 are operated simultaneously. Screws 50 permit a small independent adjustment of the air-admission valve 42. A fixed stop 68 and an adjustable stop 69 limit the movement of the lever 62. The body of the carburetter between the valves 42, 59 is constructed so that the passage 72 tapers from the centre towards the valves. An air-strangler valve 52 is used at starting. In a modified construction, Fig. 9, the tubular member 73 has an arcuate slit 74 with which co-operates an edge 78 on a valve 75, rotation of which varies the length of the slit. The invention is applicable to a downdraught carburetter.
