Abstract

In the manufacture of expanded rubber by heating dough under high gas pressure, the expansion and vulcanization is effected in stages. In an example, for producing a rigid rubber froth, a mix consisting of 60 per cent rubber, 25 per cent sulphur, 6 per cent hydrocarbon, 3 per cent magnesia, 1 per cent ceresine wax, and 5 per cent colouring matter, is placed in a container in an autoclave, and heated to a steam pressure of 8 lbs., which is reached in 30 min. Inert gas at a pressure of about 180 atmospheres is admitted to the autoclave, and the pressure and temperature are maintained for 400 min. The apparatus is allowed to cool for 60 min., the pressure is released, the container is removed and opened, whereupon the rubber expands to about six times its original volume. This rubber is placed in a second mould and heated up to 85 lbs. steam pressure in 15 min., and maintained thereat for 45 min. The rubber expands to about 13 1/2 times its original volume, and vulcanization is complete. The product of the first stage may be formed into strips from which articles may be built and welded together in the second stage, when the surfaces of the strips unite and form solid diaphragms which stiffen the article. Soft rubber articles can be made similarly. Long strips may be made by rolling up a strip of dough on a calico &c. backing treated to prevent sticking, binding the roll with canvas or thin metal, carrying out the first stage, unwinding to allow the rubber to expand, rolling up again and carrying out the second stage. An outer covering of linen, canvas, metal, or the like, may be attached at the second stage, and articles having a hard core and soft exterior may be made by uniting suitable first stage products in the second stage. The material is suitable for the manufacture of buoyant blocks for lifeboats &c., mats, heat and sound insulators.
