[Class 106 (iii).] A shaft 1, Fig. 1, rotating in the bearing 2, has fixed to it the bell-shaped member 3 in which rotate the balls 4 which bear against the plate 5 having fixed to it the rod 6, moving in a bearing 7, the end 22 of which bears against the lever 8 secured to a toothed wheel 9 which drives against the action of a spring 14 a toothed wheel 12 fixed to the indicator hand 13 moving over the scale 23 graduated to show the speed. In a modification the plate 5, Fig. 2, is fixed to a rod 16 sliding on a rod 15 fixed to the member 3 and moving in a bearing ring 17 which is fixed to the member 3 and which rotates in the bearing 18. The member 3 has fixed to it a flywheel 3<1> and the plate 5 is formed with equi-spaced grooves 21, Fig. 3, for the balls, of which there may be two rings of differently-sized balls 4, 41. The equations of the meridian lines of the inner surface of the member 3 are given for different conditions of motion, in particular for giving an equi-spaced scale 23.
