Abstract
357,989. Making concrete paving. MACKENZIE, L. R., 541, 44th Street, Des Moines, Iowa, U.S.A. June 30, 1930, No. 19881. [Class 107.] A method of making concrete pavements consists in spreading a layer of rock aggregate over an under layer of plastic concrete and subjecting the whole to pressure and a series of downward impacts by means of a travelling vibrator, the vibrations of which are substantially free from horizontal components. In the construction shown, the concrete 10 is spread upon a prepared base or sub-grade and has cast thereon a layer 12 of loose rock aggregate the size of which ranges between one and three inches. Upon the layer 12 are placed a plurality of platforms 14, each platform being formed of longitudinal slats 14a and cross slats 14b. These slats are all of the same width and are spaced equidistantly from one another. A vibrating machine is then moved over the platforms until the layer 12 is firmly embedded in the concrete and the surplus air and water forced upwardly from the latter. The layer 12 may comprise gravel, pebbles, steel slag, crushed rock, or like materials. The vibrating machine comprises a wheeled frame 16 having handles 28 and carrying an internal-combustion engine 20. The engine is provided with an overweighted piston which, when the engine is running, imparts to the frame 16 a series of vibrations which are substantially free from horizontal components.
