Abstract

357,506. Galvanic batteries. POLLOCK, S. A., Little Bush House, Kingsbury, London. March 18, 1930, No. 8726. [Class 53.] Cells; cases; gas exits; separators; connections to lead electrodes.-A storage battery has an outer casing 30 enclosing a sheet lead container 31 which is closed by a cover of lead or alloy which is joined to the lead container by fusion. The outer casing may be made of wood, steel, alloy, or other material. The inner container is made by bending a lead sheet into tubular form, the abutting edges being flanged. A fillet of lead is then placed in the angle of each flange and a blow-pipe is run along the outer surfaces of the fillets and flanges to fuse them together. The bottom is flanged and fused into position in the same way, the parts being held together by spring jaws during the burning process. The lead cover 43 is fused into position after the insertion of the plates and separators. The plates 10, 11 are surrounded by sheaths 26 of nitrated cellulose paper, the plates being provided with ridges and recesses so as to accommodate sufficient electrolyte within the sheaths to react with the whole of the active material. The plates are formed with tags 15 which are fused to interleaving lead strips 16 and each set is fused to a bus-bar 18. The latter is made of lead and covers a bronze strap 20 from which two terminal posts 19 project. Each bus-bar is of channel section and carries a tubular projection 23 for connection to a vent pipe communicating with an adjacent cell. Above the lead cover 43 are two wooden tops 46, 50 through which the terminal posts and vents pass. Adjacent cells are connected by pipes 61 terminating in bosses 60 which engage the vents 23. Pressure is exerted on the bosses 60 to compress a washer 62 by means of a bridge 63 and nuts 64. Specifications 357,504, 357,505, and 357,507 are referred to.
