Abstract

1 : 3-butyleneglycol is obtained by reduction of acetaldol under pressure and at raised temperature in presence of butyl alcohol and a highly active catalyst. The catalyst is prepared by stepped reduction of reducible metal compounds, e.g. nickel, copper, iron, cobalt, using gradually increasing quantities of hydrogen. Preferably the reduction of the catalyst is effected at the lowest possible temperature in a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture in which the hydrogen content is progressively increased. According to an example, 450 gms. of aldol are diluted with an equal weight of butyl alcohol and 20 gms. of a nickel catalyst prepared as above are added. The mixture is treated at 50-100 DEG C. under 40 atmospheres of hydrogen. A 95 per cent yield is obtained.
