Abstract
355,599. Making glass tubes or rods. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin.) Nov. 17, 1930, No. 34542. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1929. [Class 56.] Apparatus for drawing glass rods or tubes comprises a revolving mandrel surrounded by a heating-jacket into which fragments or shaped pieces of glass are inserted, so that the glass melts and flows down the mandrel and is drawn away by suitable devices. The apparatus comprises a cylinder 4, Fig. 1, which is mounted on horizontal trunnions on a carriage 2, and another cylinder 7 mounted within the cylinder 4 and rotated by a motor 26. The cylinder 7 contains a tubular jacket 10 having a lining of refractory material 11 in which an electric heating-wire 12 is embedded. A tube 17, coaxial with the jacket 10, is fixed to a cover 20 mounted in the rear of the jacket and is sheathed with refractory material 18. A tube 13 is inserted in the tube 17 and is connected by a rotary joint 15 with a compressed-air conduit 14. The tubes 13, 17 constitute the mandrel on which the glass tube is formed. In use, scrap glass is inserted in the heating- jacket 10 through openings in the cover 20 and is melted by passing electricity through the wire 12. The molten glass flows down the mandrel and forms a tube around its lower end, the jacket and mandrel being rotated during the forming-operation. Instead of using scrap glass, preformed blocks, such as those shown in Figs. 5 and 6, may be placed around the mandrel. Specification 340,076 is referred to. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), it is stated that the glass may be melted by a heating wire embedded in the mandrel or by a burner placed near the mandrel. Also, the mandrel may be omitted and the glass drawn from the interior surface of the revolving jacket. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
