Abstract

294,216. Salomon, R. July 20, 1927, [Convention date]. Glass furnaces.-Relates to a method of, and apparatus for, making glass tubing or rod by drawing the glass vertically upwards from a pot or container. The drawing pot 2, Fig. 1, has an annular cover 3 formed with a cylindrical sleeve 4 that dips into the glass 5. The pot is kept charged with glass from a tank furnace by means of a spout inserted through an opening 10, and the temperature of the glass is maintained by a gas flame which is directed along the space 14 within the cover 3. Alternatively, batch may be melted in the pot. A heat insulated metal casing 1 encloses, the pot, and the cover 19 of the casing supports a ball race 31 on which a toothed ring 29 rotates. The ring carries a number of tubes 33 which extend downwards and support a refractory sleeve 6 that dips into the glass 5, both ring and .sleeve being coaxial with the pot 2. A motor 22 rotates the ring 29 and the sleeve 6, and the rotation of the sleeve stirs and mixes the glass 5. A hollow boss 8 extends upwards from the bottom of the pot 2 and is formed with an axial hole 9. The space in the interior of the boss is connected by a pipe 43 with a blower 35. When tubing is being made, the glass is drawn upwards from the top of the boss 8 and air from the blower 35 passes through the axial hole 9 into the interior of the tubing. When making rod, the hole 9 is not required. The rotating sleeve 6 surrounds the boss 8 and allows only the undersurface glass to reach the boss. Jets of air, supplied through the tubes 33, may be used to cool the surface of the glass within the sleeve 6, and a water-cooled cylinder 78 may be placed within the cylinder 4 to assist in cooling the glass. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), modified constructions of the drawing pot are described in which the lower part is rotated to stir the glass and in which the boss 8 is dispensed with, the tubing being drawn from a floating forming-block. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
