Abstract

355,291. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., MOODY, H. S., and SCOTT, T. R., Columbia House, Aldwych, London. May 21, 1930, No. 15624. [Class 36.] An electric cable comprises a structure or layer formed of one or more overlapping spirals of paper having a surface partly, or wholly, metallized. The structure may act as a capillary reservoir, or may be used for binding down the capillary reservoir of a cable, or for binding together the elements of a multi-core cable. In the construction of Fig. 1, metallized paper tapes 3, 4 are applied over the metallized layer 2 surrounding the dielectric of a type H cable. The tapes 3, 4 overlap for preferably half their width with the metallized surfaces m in contact, the layer 2 being thus conductively connected over the metallized surfaces of the tapes 3, 4 to the lead sheath 5. In the arrangement of Fig. 2, a similar structure is shown adapted to bind down a capillary reservoir of which the outer surface comprises tapes 6, 7, the tape 6 being metallized. The tapes 3, 4 may be of absorbent material to contribute to the capillary reservoir action on the principle described in Specification 291,871, [Class 36, Electricity, Conducting &c.]. In the construction of Fig. 3, the tapes 3, 4 are applied in pairs with the metallized surfaces engaged by overlapping. Between the alternate tapes at the surface of the structure, a wick paper 8 is applied to augment the capillary attraction at the surface as described in Specification 337,042, [Class 36, Electricity, Conducting &c.]. The construction may be applied as an inner or core reservoir as described in Specification 340,303, or as an intermediate or outer reservoir as described in Specification 291,871. Further constructions are built up from a paper roll having alternate metallized and plain portions. The roll is cut into tapes of requisite width. In Fig. 4, the tape 11 is applied about a conductor 10, and consists of a pair of metallised papers with metal faces in contact. The non-metallized parts 12 of the structure act as a core reservoir, and a metallized surface 15 surrounds the tapes over the length of the core reservoir. A metallized layer 13, which may be an ordinary intersheath, lies between the surface 15 and the outer dielectric 14. The metallized surface 15 may be omitted. In a modified construction, the tape pairs 11 are staggered so that in any cross section of the cable there is substantially the same amount of metallization.
