[Class 38 (iv).] An electrical transmission gear of the type where the generator armature a, as shown in Fig. 1, coupled to the prime mover shaft k, and an intermediate rotating member is coupled to the driven shaft w and carries the generator field magnets b and motor armature d, and a stationary member carries the motor field h, is shown in Fig. 2 with the motor field winding h connected in series with a battery c and the field h and battery connected in parallel with the generator field b. The voltage applied to the motor field winding is thus equal to the difference between the battery voltage and the drop across the winding b. The drop across the field b decreases as the vehicle speed increases and when the drop is less than the battery voltage the field h reverses. The voltage generated by a, b drops and the motor d, h generates, creating a braking torque. Automatic variation of the motor field according to the resistance of the vehicle to motion is thus obtained.
