354,932. Applying screw - stoppers to bottles &c. BOURNE, Ltd., H. & W., Spring Lane, Woodside London, and BOURNE, W. F., Deacon's Hay, Chelwood Gate, Sussex. June 24, 1930, Nos. 19263 and 32131. [Class 125 (ii).] A machine for applying or removing screw - stoppers to bottles &c. comprises a conveyer 36, upper and lower bottle locating discs 27, 37, a loose wheel 29, provided with a pneumatic tyre 30 and a curved vertical plate 33 with a resilient face 34 which co-operates with the tyre 30 in rotating the bottles. The spindle 12 is driven from a sprocket wheel 21 which is in frictional engagement with discs 22, 23. The hub 25 of the disc 23 is mounted on the hub 26 of the disc 27. The hubs 25, 26 are fixed to the spindle 12, which has therefor a slip. drive.. The wheel 29. is driven from a sprocket 32. When the wheel 29 is rotated the bottles are carried through the machine and rotated about their axes. The bottles are fed from the conveyer 36 and are removed thereon. The discs 27, 37 have peripheral recesses for locating the bottles and are fixed to the spindle 12. In starting the machine it is necessary to drive these discs, hence the slip drive for the sprocket 21 otherwise the discs 27, 37 are carried round by the bottles. Closure-applying devices 42 are pivotally mounted on the disc 37 and are provided with cam followers 45, which co-operate with a cam 46. Pneumatically operated gripping devices are provided in each applying device and are operated at the requisite time to grip a stopper through flexible pipes 54. The air operating the gripping devices is controlled by a rotary valve 55, 56. The stoppers are fed to the closure-applying devices by a rotary 'conveyer (not shown in Fig. 2). The discs 27, 37 are rotated intermittently and the stoppers are transferred to the applying means during the intermissions of the discs. The extent to which the stoppers are tightened in the bottles is governed by the pressure within the tyre 30. When removing stoppers the machine is reversed. The stoppers may be fed along a track in a single row as described in Provisional Specification. Polygonal and other shaped bottles are enclosed in circular matrices when stoppered in the machine, and the machine may be used for applying external screwcaps.
