Abstract

354,787. Methods of lasting boots &c. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Goddu, G. ; Winchester, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) May 14, 1930, No. 14789. Convention date, July 13, 1929. [Classes 17 (ii) and 89 (iii).] Connecting uppers to insoles and soles; methods of lasting; stapling machines using continuous wire. -In the manufacture of boots, &c. wherein cement is used to attach shoe uppers in lasted relation to soles and temporary fastenings movable with the shoe from operator to operator are employed to hold the upper in lasted relation to the sole while the cement is setting and are subsequently removed, (a) the fastenings employed may not extend entirely through the sole to the inner face, or (b) the cement employed may be rubber latex. In one form, an upper 12, doubler, lining, and box toe are pulled over an insole 22 on a last in any usual manner and the upper is secured at the heel, together with a fibre board 24, by tacks driven by the pulling-over machine. Side lasting, e.g. by a machine described in Specification 294,640, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], is performed after the marginal portions of the layers of the upper and insole margin from approximately the forward end of the waist to the tip-line position have been coated with a water-dispersed rubber cement, preferably one containing 40 per cent or somewhat less of rubber and which sets in about 30 minutes. The staple fastenings 50 driven by the lasting machine have their legs deflected as they enter the stock to curve them and do not pass through to the inner surfaces of the insole, and preferably are not fuly driven, as shown, to facilitate their subsequent extraction by a hand or power-operated staple removing tool. The upper adjacent the edge of the insole may be pounded or rubbed to eliminate wrinkles. The ends of the shoe are lasted by a bed-lasting machine of usual type. The toe end may be lasted by the machine described in Specification 338,558, [Class 17 (i), Boots and shoes, Apparatus for making &c.], after trimming surplus material from the doubler, box toe, and lining, and coating the parts with pyroslin cement. After the cements have set, the fastenings are extracted, a waist stiffener is applied, as well as a sheet filler, if so desired, and an outer sole is cemented to the secured marginal portion of the upper. The waist a so may be secured without permanent metallic fastenings in similar manner, if desired, or the fastenings there may be allowed to remain.
