[Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] Apparatus for longitudinally folding a web is associated with means which advance the web without gripping action and comprise devices adapted to engage the web periodically. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a web A<1> is supplied from a printing-press A or a roll and passes through an initial folding-device D<1> to a feed-device E arranged at the delivery end. The device D<1> is arranged below a curved web-guide D and consists of two oppositely-directed pairs 1a, 2a of curved fingers which initiate the formation of three folds 3a, 3b, 3c. The feed-device consists of a roller 7, and discs 9 b having leather segments 9d. The web is confined without gripping by roller and discs, and the segments intermittently strike the web to maintain feed thereof. The feed-device is supported by a plate 6 mounted on rods 5 on a standard 4. The shaft 9a of the discs is mounted in arms 10 which are adjustable by means of a threaded rod 14 and nuts 16. The shafts are driven by means of belts 19, 20 from a shaft 17. The upper rod 5 is provided with standards 24, 25 carrying pairs 24a, 25a of fingers for bringing more closely together the initial folds. The plate 6 supports a guide-throat 12b for the web. Feed is assisted by a roller C which is driven at a slightly higher speed than the press cylinders, the roller 7 and discs 9b being driven at a slightly higher speed than the roller C. The folded strip may be delivered to longitudinal-folding or winding- mechanism.
