One of the end drums 20 is provided with a recess 20 and a. disk 20 is housed in said recess and is loosely mounted upon the shaft 19. The drums 20 upon the same shaft are mounted upon a sleeve 19 and the sleeve 19 is loose upon the shaft 19. The shaft 19 is fixed to the frame of the press. The guard 26 is adjustably fixed to the shaft 19. The pawl 23 is pivoted upon the disk 20 and the rod 29 is pivoted at its lower end to the disk rotated and cause the cam 34 to depress the arm 29 and cause the rod-29 to move the drums 20 a portion of a revolution, and cause the pawl. 23 to correspondingly actuate the drums 20 for a short distance, the object to be hereafter explained. By adjusting the hoods 26 the action of the pawls 23 can becontrolled to correspondingly control the distance which the drums are rotated.
Supported upon the frame 10 at one'end is a bracket 35 carrying a platform 36 and a vertical stud 37 to receive a roll 38 of the paper to be printed.
Extending from the frame 10 at one end is a bracket 39 having a longitudinal slot 40, while a similar bracket 41 extends from the opposite end of the frame andis provided with a longitudinal slot 42.

Slidable in the slot is a stud 43 including a platform 44 rotatively supporting a small hollow drum 45, and slidably supported in the slot 42 is a like stud 46 including a platform 47 and rotatively supporting a hol- The drums and 48 are provide with heating means, for instance gas burners or the like, an indicated conventionally at 54 and 55, to rapidly dry the ink upon the strip Extending between the members 11 are spaced plates 57 and 58, which form the platen elements of the improved press, and will be clothed with the usual tympan members, not shown, the members 57 and 58 being coupled at suitable intervals by web like stays 59.
In preparing the improved press for operation, the paper 56 is first passed over the surface of the platen member 57 and around the drum 48, thence between the platen members 57 and 58, thence around the drum thence over the platen member 58, thence between pull rollers 69 and 61, the latter provided with means for being intermittently rotated to draw the paper outwardly after being printed and into the severing devices indicated conventionally at 62.
V The frame 10 includes transversely arranged spaced. guide members having guide channels 64, preferably V shaped, in their upper faces, as shown in Figure 3. Slidably disposed above each of the guides 63 is a supporting member 65, each of the latter having a rib 66 engaging in one of the guide channels 64.
Rising from each of the members is a bracket 67, the brackets supporting type holding frames 68, the latter indicated conventionally at 69, and adapted to be adj usi'ied by set screws 7 O.
The members 65, 67 and 68 are movable to ward and away from each other to cause the printing elements 69 to be compressed against the paper 56 as the latter is moved over the tympan elements.
Depending from each of the members 65 is a. hanger 71, the hangers at each side of'the shaft 25 being coupled respectively by counter shafts 27.
The main drive shaft 27 is provided with spaced double cranks 73, the cranks being coupled to theshafts 72 by rods 74, as shown.
By this means when the shaft 27 is rotated, the type carrying elements will be simultaneously moved toward and away from each other, to produce the printing action.
The ink applying devices are indicated conventionally at 79, but form no part of the present invention and require no further description.
The operation is simple and may be summarized as follows:
The paper 56 to be printed is threaded around the drums 45 and 48 as before described, and the color transfer paper 21, passed downward over the guide rollers 17 and between the pull drums 20. Then when motion is imparted to the shaft 27, the type elements 6869 are simultaneously moved toward each other and the printing opera tion completed including the transference of the coloring matter from the strips 21. v The coacting parts 29-29 and 34 are so adjusted that when the shaft 27 operates the printing action, the rollers 20 will be rotated to a sufficient extent to move the requisite portion of the colored, transfer element into position opposite the type bearing elements, so that as the latter are intermittently operated by the action of the cranks 73 and links 74-, the colored transfer elements 21 will be likewise intermittently actuated through the medium-of the cam 34 and arm 29. The throw of the drums 2Ov are the same at each rotation of the shaft 27, but by adjusting the hoods 26, the pawl 23 may beengaged with any required number-of the teeth of the ratchet at each stroke, to control the 7 amount of the transfer material used. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:" V

A printing press comprising a supporting frame, platen members supported on said frame in spaced relation, a printing form bearing member coacting with each of said platen members, means for simultaneously and intermittentlyfmoving said print ing form bearing memberstoward and away from said platen members, means forinter-' mittently novin'ga printing sheet over said platen members, a sheet of color imparting material, a. drum operative tolfeed said color imparting material over said print-ing sheet, a ratchet coacting with said drum, a pawl device engageable with said ratchet, means for intermittently actuating said drum, and a guard'element operative to'hold said pawl away from said ratchet, and means for adjusting said guard element to control. the throw of said'drum.
