Abstract

354,331. Spring motors. MYERS, M., 21, Darnley Road, Mare Street, Hackney, London. Feb. 10, 1930, No. 4452. [Class 10.] In a spring motor, particularly for gramophones, two or more springs are arranged so that they can be wound up successively in an intermittent manner and may afterwards unwind simultaneously to deliver the stored power. The outer ends of the springs a, a<1> are secured to a barrel b which is anchored to a pillar w. The inner end of the upper spring a is secured to a sleeve c and the inner end of the lower spring a<1> is secured to an arbor c<1> coaxial with the sleeve c. A thin plate 18 separates the springs. Winding-up is effected by a lever f, Fig. 2, pivoted at 11 and having a toothed sector 21 engaging gears 20, 25. One-way clutches comprising pawl-and-ratchet gears are provided and the toothed gears are so arranged that when the lever f is rocked in the direction of the arrow A it winds up the spring a through the gear train 21, 20 and the clutch 19, d, but does not wind the second spring a<1>. When the lever f is rocked in the opposite direction it winds up the second spring a<1> through the gear train 21, 25, 24, 22 and the clutch 23, d<1>, but does not wind the first spring a. In the end position of the lever f its sector 21 is out of gear with the gears 20, 25 and then the stored power may be used to drive the spindle u through gearing t when the brake of the speed governor 4 is released. The springs unwind simultaneously and drive through ratchet clutches k, k<1>, gears m, ml and an intermediate shaft o. The arm f may extend through a slot in the side of the gramophone cabinet, or it may be cranked and extend through a curved slot in the top wall, or it may be engaged by a pin movable in a straight slot in the top wall.
