Abstract

736,198. Clockwork winding devices. FRANCIS, B. F. Dec. 23,1953 [Sept. 9,1953], No. 24933/53. Class 10. [Also in Group XV] In a keyless clockwork winding device in which a spring is wound by the actuation of a withdrawable member, the power transmission between the member and the spring comprises an epicyclic gear train, the gear elements of which are adapted to be locked together when the withdrawable member is actuated to wind the spring and to be unlocked when the member is released, to enable the latter to be returned to starting position independently of the rotation of the spring. In the motor shown, a main spring 38 drives wheels 26 through gears 44, 45, 46, 48, the main spring being anchored at one end to the motor frame 25 and at the other to a shaft 37. The latter is rotated and the spring wound by withdrawing, from around a pulley 22, a cable 23. The pulley, which is of plastic, is integrally moulded with an internal gear 32 which meshes with a pinion 34 attached to the shaft 37 through a planet gear 36. A spring 40 is connected between the frame 25 and the pulley side plate 27 such that it also is tensioned during withdrawal of the cable 23, but may act independently of the main spring to return the pulley to its " cable wound " position. On withdrawal of the cable (Fig. 3), a stop member 33 locks with the gear 36 and the shaft is rotated anti-clockwise to wind springs 38, 40. On completion of this operation the relative positions of the gears remain as in Fig. 3. The release of the cable, however, allows spring 40 to rotate the pulley in a clockwise direction to re-wind the cable and change the relative positions of the gears to those shown in Fig. 4. Release of the braking pressure on shaft 37 enables the spring 38 to drive the clockwork and cause the gear 36 to return to its Fig. 3 position. In a modification, the pulley 22 is replaced by a drum containing the epicyclic transmission and provided on its side with a ratchet pinion for engagement with a slidable rack which replaces the cable 23.
