Abstract
Acetic, propionic, and other aliphatic acids are extracted from their aqueous solutions by means of solvents comprising at least one ether of a monohydric phenol such as the methyl, ethyl and propyl a -naphthol ethers, the methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, and paratolyl b -naphthol ethers, the cresyl ether, anisol, phenetol, and phenyl ether. The solvent may be mixed with the aqueous acid and the extract fractionally distilled, or the vapour of the dilute acid may be passed through the solvent at a temperature at which the water remains in the vapour form, for instance in countercurrent in a fractionating column into which the solvent is admitted as a stream or spray, or the vapour of the dilute acid may be mixed with the vapour of the solvent, the mixture being then cooled to condense the acid while leaving the water in vapour form. The solvent is preferably circulated between an absorption and a distillation zone, and the absorption zone may be at ordinary or raised temperature such as 50-90 DEG C.
