[Class 45.] In order that a turnbuckle may work under tension or compression the adjusting nut thereof is held against longitudinal movement relatively to the turnbuckle body by means carried by the turnbuckle body and locking means may be provided for preventing the rotation, relatively to the turnbuckle body, of the screw-threaded rod which passes through the adjusting nut. Several forms are described, that shown in Fig. 3, for example, comprising a flange 5 formed by beating over, crimping or pressing in the inner edge of the bead 6 of the turnbuckle 1, the nut 2 bearing upon the flange 5. In Fig. 6 a locking plate 11 having a central aperture 12 formed with two opposite flats 13<1>, 13<2> corresponding to flats 10<1> formed on the screwed rod 3, is held by a flange 8 pressed in the turnbuckle body. This arrangement locks the nut against longitudinal movement and the rod against rotation. In Fig. 9 the locking plate is screwed into the turnbuckle body as shown at 15, 16, or teeth may be formed in the locking plate to take between corresponding teeth formed on the inside of the turnbuckle body. In Fig. 12 lugs 171, 17<2> are formed in a sheet metal stamping 1 so that when the stamping is folded as in Fig. 11 to form the turnbuckle a gap is left between the ends of the lugs corresponding to the distance between the flats on the screwed rod. In Fig. 17 rivets or screws 20<1>, 20<2> are secured in the branches of the turnbuckle, a gap being left between the ends to receive the flats on the screwed rod. In Fig. 24 a locking plate 28 having a central aperture is formed with cut-out portions which accommodate the legs 1a, 1b of the turnbuckle whereby the locking plate is prevented from rotating.
