April 8,1930, No. 11190. [Class 46.] A filter for liquid fuel systems, such as those of automobiles, aircraft, and motor-boats, comprises a cylindrical filtering element arranged in an outer casing which is closed at one end and has apertures for the entry of the liquid in the side of the casing, said casing being provided with a valve which closes to prevent the escape of liquid when the filter element is removed from its position or released. Liquid from a tank K, Fig. 1, passes through apertures G into a tube E, attached to an adapter D screwed into the base of the tank, and through filtering- material C on a perforated tube A from the lower end of which the liquid is discharged. When a cock or connection B is unscrewed from the adapter, as for the cleansing of the filter element, a valve H is forced by a spring I upon a seat F and prevents escape of the liquid. In a modification a ball, supported on the upper end of the tube A and tailing under gravity when the tube is removed, takes the place of the valve member H. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement of the device in a casing M connected in a pipe line N, L. In this case the valve H closes when the pipe L is unscrewed from the adapter D.
