Abstract
Sticky reaction products of rubber are produced by treating rubber with substantial amounts of organic nitroso compounds. The compounds which are used include nitrosobenzene, nitrosamines such as dimethyl nitrosamine, para-nitrosodiphenylamine, p-nitrosotoluene, p-nitrosophenol, or mixtures thereof. These products are used for bonding rubber compositions with metals or wood. The reaction may be carried out by milling in the nitroso compound, or mixing rubber latex with an aqueous dispersion of the nitroso compound, or by mixing the rubber dissolved in any solvent with a solution of the nitroso compound. Example: 250 grams of para-nitrosodimethylaniline are milled into 750 grams of rubber for about half an hour at 80 DEG C. The product is allowed to mature for 24 hours before being used.
