[Class 81 (i).] An air filter for a steam sterilizing chamber is so arranged that it is subjected to the sterilizing action of the chamber, and means are provided for preheating the air prior to its admission thereto. Preferably, the filter is situated within the sterilizing chamber, but it may be disposed exteriorly in a separate chamber. In one modification, Fig. 1, a body member 5 is secured between inner wall 2 and cover plate 7 in the outer wall 3 of the steam jacket. Air entering the chamber passes through tubular valve 13 to recess 17 and is heated in coiled pipe 18 situated in the steam jacket, thence passing through axial passage 19 to air filter 1. It is then filtered through filter medium 23, escaping into the chamber by holes 24 in dish-shaped annular member 21. Fig. 4 illustrates a construction wherein means are provided so that steam may be admitted into the sterilizing chamber in addition to, or in place of air. The tubular valve 13 is fitted within valve sleeve 25 and serves for admission of air as described for Fig. 1. Admission of steam to coiled pipe 18 by way of ports 27 is controlled by valve sleeve 25. A pressure-reducing valve 28 is provided to allow of a lower pressure in the sterilizing chamber. An additional filtering device may be provided exteriorly to the chamber. The air may be induced to enter the chamber by the use of a vacuum ejector, or by condensation. It is stated that in apparatus of known construction, a filter is positioned exteriorily to the sterilizer, a valve being disposed in the conduit, heated if desired, between the filter and sterilizer.
