Abstract
Bleached gum-rosin or wood-rosin is heated below the decomposition temperature in order to reduce the tendency to crystallization. With wood-rosin the treatment also reduces the content of the potential colour bodies which in the process of sizing paper give a yellowish colour on solution of the rosin in alkali and subsequent treatment with aluminium salts. The heating is carried out at a temperature between 260 DEG C. and 325 DEG C., the period varying accordingly from 8 hours to 10 minutes, for example 2 hours at 300 DEG C., as described for crude wood-rosin in U.S. Patent 1,643,276. The process may be applied to rosin which has been lightened in colour by any known method, such as distillation in vacuo, extraction with solvents, treatment with stannic chloride or other salts, or filtration through fuller's earth. Besides destroying the potential colour bodies and reducing the tendency to crystallization, the process removes part of the remaining colour, reduces the water content of wood rosin, and increases the optical rotatory power in naphtha. The optical rotation may be used as a test for the tendency to crystallize, and may be increased by the process to + 20 or even + 32 for gum rosin, or to + 40 or over for wood rosin. Rosin, treated as described, is altered chemically so that on distilling off 1 to 10 per cent in vacuo under a fractionating column, a residue of high melting point and viscosity is obtained, specially suitable for lacquers and in making cores for foundry work.
