Abstract

351,516. Condensers. STAVE, C. H., 182, Church Street, Kensington, London. March 20, 1930, Nos. 9006 and 15132. [Class 38 (ii).] The plates of rotary variable condensers are so constructed as to offer a tortuous path to eddy currents to reduce losses from this cause. Fig. 1 shows a plate of metal with parallel slots a cut in it at right-angles or any other angle to the edge b, or cut in groups the angles in the groups being the same or differing. The slots may be angular or curved and may be discontinuous, or a single slot may be zig-zag as shown in Fig. 5 or in the form of a spiral. The curved edges may be intersected by a series of cut slots forming a comb-like construction, Fig. 7, or a similar formation may be made of "looped" wire secured in a strengthening rod of insulating material. In Fig. 9 such a form d is attached to a. metal backing f with radiating arms. In a further modification a metal or other frame extends round the edge and straight wires radiate from one point fanwise to the other edges. A filament or ribbon of metal may be applied or embedded in a plate of insulating material such as Bakelite, and the operating rods of the condenser may be made of the same material.
