Abstract

350,337. Coiling. GRISCOMRUSSELL CO., 285, Madison Avenue, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Dewald, E. A. ; Massillon, Ohio, U.S.A.) Sept. 5, 1930, No. 26623. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1929. [Class 83 (iv).] Dies.-A machine for coiling metal ribbon on edge has means for gripping that edge of the ribbon that is to be on the inside of the coil and carrying it about a core while guiding the other portions to prevent buckling. The ribbon 27 is fed from a drum 28 through a guide 30 to a rotating former 24 having a slightly conical face 101, Fig. 12, and a cylindrical face, 101<1>, to. determine the inside diameter of the coil, both faces being of hardened and ground steel. A lower former 25, rotated at the same speed as 24 by gearing 47, 42, 41, 43, 44, 38, Fig. 1, from the main shaft 32, consists of segments 108, Fig. 12, which, for most of each revolution, engage the face 101<1> but are withdrawn between C, D, Fig. 10, by a fixed cam 112. The axis of the former 25 is set by means of studs at an angle to that of the former 24 so that its face, on the line a, b, is parallel with the face 101 and separated by the thickness of the ribbon. With this arrangement the ribbon is first gripped between the formers 24, 25 at d, Fig. 15, and the width gripped increases, as indicated by the line 123 and similarly decreases until the segments 108 are withdrawn. If the coil tends to stick to the face 101 it is separated by a fixed blade, not shown. The coil passes through the former 25 on to a detachable support 31, Fig. 1, which is rotated at a speed slightly less than the formers by adjustable friction gearing 59, 57, Fig. 2, and chain gearing 54 from the main shaft 32. This is driven by a motor 34 through gearing 35 when a clutch 36 is closed by a lever 61, spring-pressed link 64, and spring-returned handle 66. Return of the lever 61 is prevented by a spring pin 71, Fig. 5, until this is retracted by its hook 76 engaging a projection 75 on a chain 74 which is moved in the direction of the arrow by a ratchet on the shaft 79 and a pawl eccentrically mounted on a shaft 85 driven from shaft 32. When this occurs the clutch is opened and the machine stops. The operator then cuts off the coil made and removes it, raises the pawl, and turns the ratchet in the reverse direction until the projection 75 engages a stop 94 which has been.previously set in such position of the groove 96, Fig. 2, that this travel of the projection 75 corresponds to the desired length of coil. The machine can then be restarted and the operation repeated. If desired the former 24 may be adjusted to produce a cross section tapered in either direction or, by being spaced wider than the original ribbon, a cross section which has parallel sides except at the outside edge which is tapered.
