Abstract

In the process of the parent Specification, for condensing indene, an indene derivative or a substance containing indene with a mono or polyhydric phenol, any inorganic acid or acid salt thereof is used as a condensing agent in place of a halogen acid. In examples (1) resorcinol is reacted with solvent naphtha using sulphuric acid, acid sodium sulphate and phosphoric acid as condensing agents. Xylene may be used as a diluent: (2) phenol is reacted with sulphuric acid in the presence of sulphuric acid: (3) 1 : 7-dioxynaphthalene dissolved in alcohol is reacted with solvent naphtha, using sulphuric acid as condensing agent. The products are oils or resins.
