348,547. Acoustic horns. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London.-(Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc. ; 463, West Street, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 12, 1930, No. 4764. [Class 13.] An acoustic horn which occupies a minimum of space in a direction perpendicular to the plane of its opening or flared end 1 has a plurality of tapered sound passages merging into a common flare 2, and each passage has a bend 5 of 90‹ or slightly more near the opening, a straight portion 9 extending from this bend in a plane substantially parallel to the plane of the opening, another bend 13 through about 180‹ about centres of curvature remote from the flare, followed by a substantially straight portion extending towards the flare. Divided throat portions may be connected at each of the input ends 17 so that any desired number of receivers may be used. The horn may be made in sections of steel with angle-iron flanges connecting them and a flange 16 at the opening may be provided for fixing the horn to any means of support such as a theatre screen or to a separate drop to be moved with the screen. Suspension chains may be connected to eyebolts 21 .. 24. Sheets of damping material such as flannel may be stuck to the surface of the horn if and where required. In a modification, the return portions 11 of the bends 13 are made approximately parallel to the portions 9 and penetrate the side of the flared opening to emerge centrally behind the flare after joining together inside the mouth.
