Abstract
348,187. Coating surfaces with glass. ARNOLD, S., 57, Boileau Road, Ealing, London. Feb. 10, 1930, No. 4420. [Class 56.] In an apparatus for coating surfaces with glass or other vitreous material, the glass in the form of powder or small pieces is impelled by a current of preheated compressed air through a heated chamber in which the glass becomes melted and from which it is sprayed in molten condition on to the surface to be coated. In this way, a wall, ceiling, or ship's hull may be coated with vitreous material. The powdered glass is withdrawn from the bottom of a hopper 1 and is introduced into an upwardlycurved conduit 2 by the action of a jet of preheated compressed air passing through an injector 3, the air being supplied from a suitable preheater by a hose 4. The conduit 2 comprises a tube of refractory material enclosed within a graphite tube 5 which forms an electric resistance heater, the whole being surrounded by a lagging 7 in a rigid envelope 8. The powdered glass becomes melted within the tube and finally issues from a nozzle 9 as a spray which adheres to the surface towards which the nozzle is directed. The surface may be roughened, or treated with a substance such as sodium silicate, in order to form a key for the glass. The furnace may be heated by gas burners if desired.
