Abstract
348,163. Road rammers. RIDER, R. W., 1219, Fenway Avenue, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A. Nov. 7, 1929, No. 34018. [Class 107.] In crank and connecting-rod mechanism for tamping, ramming, &c., the crankpin 3 on the rotary shaft 1 carries loosely an eccentric 4 upon which turn the strap 6 and integral connecting-rod 8, with or without intervening ball or roller bearings. The eccentric 4 is unbalanced, as by the use of holes 13 and a mercury - containing chamber closed by a screw 12, so that, at rest, its greatest radius a, a is inclined to the vertical. In a modification, Fig. 4, the eccentric is normally positioned relatively to its strap by the use of springs 18, 19 abutting against shoulders on the strap and against a pin 22 in the eccentric, so that, with the rod 8 substantially vertical, the line a, a is inclined to the rod. At slow speeds, the line a, a undergoes a substantially parallel motion in space, but at high speeds centrifugal action upon the eccentric increases the thrust of the crank.
