Abstract

348,125. Supporting and controlling aircraft; screw propellers. WOOD, C. A. W., 4, Dumayne Avenue, Kidderpore, Calcutta, India. Nov. 8, 1929, No. 34199. [Classes 4 and 114.] An aeroplane fitted with adjustable sustaining surfaces capable of being set at angles of incidence greater than the normal is provided with means adapted to be intruded into the path of the slip. stream close behind the propeller to intercept part of the stream. A monoplane, Fig. 1, is fitted with adjustable pockets 1 normally nested against the nose of the body 2 behind the airscrew 3 but capable of being opened to the position shown, simultaneous adjustment of the wing 4 to the position shown in dotted lines being stated to result in vertical flight with the airscrew running at or near its full rate of revolution. The pockets 1, Fig. 8, are hinged to the body at 6 and are connected at points 8 to endless wires 7 running over pulleys 9 and a drum 11 which can be rotated by the pilot through the gearing shown. Locking means for the adjusting gears are provided. The monoplane wing is pivoted about an axis 27, Fig. 5, at or near its centre of pressure and is adjusted by means of a frame 26 connected to an endless cable 21 running over pulleys 22 and rotated by the pilot through the lever and shaft system shown. Fig. 7 shows the means for adjusting biplane wings of which the upper is pivoted at or near its centre of pressure and the lower near to its trailing edge. According to modifications a separate pivoted sustaining surface independent of the main wings may be that to be acted on by the slipstream. More than one set of adjustable pockets may be fitted and the invention may be applied to multi-engined aircraft. Planes of low aspect ratio may be fitted. The airscrew may have forwardly bent tips as shown in Fig. 1.
