Abstract

Crystalline zinc sulphide for use as a pigment is produced by heating, for instance, at 1000 DEG C., raw zinc sulphide in a chamber from which air is excluded, and conveying the vapours in a <PICT:0347799/III/1> stream of inert gas such as super-heated steam or nitrogen to a collecting medium. Referring to the drawing, crude ore, preferably mixed with anthracite coal to produce electrical conductivity, is fed to preheater 9, through feed gate 12 to second preheater 16 and furnace chamber 8. The gate 12 is controlled by electrodes 15. When the level of the material drops, contact is broken, and by suitable mechanism the gate is opened. The temperature obtained in the second preheater approximates to that produced between electrodes 6, 7. Vaporized zinc sulphide is drawn through tuyere passage 19 to condensing chamber 20 by blower 21 to separator 22 and bags 24. Nitrogen or superheated steam from generator 25 is circulated through the furnace, partly by pipe 26, partly by pipe 29. This latter includes a coil 30 to provide a cooling action on the hot vapours. The lower end of the furnace extends into water in a rotating bowl 31. Solid residue is removed by a scraper 33, waste water flowing into a trough-like member 34.
