Abstract

347,212. Fluid - pressure steering- gear for motor vehicles, boats, and aeroplanes. LEUPOLD, M., 165, Chapin Court, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 20, 1930, No. 1962. [Class 79 (v).] Power-steering apparatus comprises a pump 10 reciprocating piston means 25, 26 acting on steering knuckles 32, 33 or the like, and a rotary valve 15 having an axial port 36 connected with the pump outlet 13, said port being in communication with a radial passage 37 adapted to be selectively connected to the pump inlet 17 or to either face of the reciprocating piston means upon rotary movement of the valve. Byepasses 40, 40<1> are formed in the valve and corresponding openings are made in the valve lining or packing 39 so that when the radial passage 37 is connected to either one of two ports 19, 20 in the valve casing leading through pipes 21, 22 to the pistons the other port is connected by the corresponding byepass to the pump inlet. When the valve is in the normal position shown in Fig. 1 the pump circulates fluid idly through the pipes 13, 17 and the valve. To steer to the left (say) the valve is moved by its handle 46 in a counterclockwise direction to the position shown in Fig. 3, the passage 37 being connected to the pipe 21 and the pipes 22, 17 being connected by the byepass 40. Fluid is thus pumped into the pipe 21 and acts on the piston 25 which is moved to the right and so moves the steering wheels to the left ; at the same time the piston 26 is moved by the rods 28, 27, and the liquid in its cylinder passes through the pipe 22, byepass 40 and pipe 17 back to the pump. A byepass 53 with a check valve 53<1> connects the inlet and outlet of the pump, and a filling tank 54 is provided. The steering arms 32, 33 are connected together by rods 30, 34. The valve handle is provided with a spring pin 50 coacting with a rim 50<1> and with stops 52 to retain it in selected positions. A single double-acting piston and cylinder may be used instead of the two pistons and cylinders shown.
