Abstract
346,036. Washing machines. POINTON, J. E. and BAKER PERKINS, Ltd., Westwood Works, Peterborough. Jan. 9, 1930, Nos. 826 and 14597. [Class 138 (ii).] The clothes receptacle 47, Fig. 4, of a washing- machine is rotatably mounted within a liquid container 20 which itself is mounted so as to be rotatable within limits whereby it may be moved manually or by power to a position for the washing operation in which an aperture 25 therein registers with a stationary closure member 15 or to a position in which the aperture 25 registers with an aperture 18 in the member 15 so that the receptacle, after it has been rotated to a corresponding position, may be unloaded, Fig. 6, or loaded, Fig. 7. The closing of the aperture 25 in the washing positionis completed by the engagement of an angle iron 26, Fig. 4, formed along one edge thereof with a padded stop 45 formed on the inside of the stationary member 15, whilst a similar iron along the other edge registers with an inturned lip 19 at one edge of the aperture 18 in the member 15. In the load or unload position of the container a bar 78, Fig. 6, thereon abuts against a stop 79 on the member 15. The rocking of the container on its axis may be effected by the rotation of a screwthreaded shaft 68, Fig. 3, within a nut 69 which engages a radial guide 70 in one of the end walls of the container. Whilst the container is being moved to unload or load position, discharge valves 27, Fig. 4, therein are automatically opened against the pressure of the liquid in the container by the engagement of the valve stems 29'with stationary ramps 31. Means may be provided for operating the valves independently of the movement of the container, and in a modification, Fig. 8, slidably mounted discharge valves 32 are held closed in the washing position by weighted levers 33, the valves being opened by the pressure of the liquid when the container is rotated counterclockwise. A valve in a casing 61, Fig. 3, into which a number of different fluid supply pipes 62 discharge is opened to supply liquids to the machine by the movement of the container to washing position, a lug on the container engaging with the valve operating lever 59. To reduce torsional strain in the clothes receptacle which is driven at one end only, a diaphragm 53, Fig. 6, formed of two plates arranged in the form of a flat diamond engaging the receptacle shaft 49 is secured along its edges to the inside of the cylindrical wall and end discs of the receptacle. The diaphragm also facilitates unloading.
