Abstract

345,369. Manually-operated valves; closure members. SCHMALZ, C. H., 1615, West Tioga Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A. Jan. 2,1930, No. 185. [Class 135.] Rotary disc valves ; wedging or jamming.-A double-disc rotary sliding valve comprises ported and partiallynested discs 9, 10 rotated in unison by tongue and socket connection 18, 19 from hand-driven bevel toothed gearing 34, 35. A floating wedge member 40 disposed between the discs and normally rotatable therewith is arrested by engagement with a casing stop 36 as the discs are approaching their closed position. Wedge surfaces on the member 40 thereby coact with corresponding projections 45, 46 on one of the discs so that by a floating pivotal action of the wedge member 40 the discs are wedged apart tightly against their seatings in the closed position. One pair of coacting wedge devices are formed V-shaped, 42 and 46, to control the movements of the wedge member. The ports C in the discs are aligned with the passageway 5 by a projection 25 on one of the discs engaging the casing stop 36. The floating wedge may be replaced by a radially-operated wedge or by a wedge member pivoted near the centre of the discs. An alternative hand drive, shown in Fig. 21, comprises a hand sector 68 with internal teeth 67 engaging a pinion shaft geared to teeth 62 on the periphery of the valve disc 9.
