Abstract

345,150. Detachable propelling installations. SCHALK, J. R., Rhinebeck, New York, U.S.A. May 14,1930, No. 14822. [Class 114.] An outboard propeller installation with depending shaft which can be tilted to avoid obstructions and turned to effect steering is characterized by the provision at the top and bottom gear-casings of sets of bevel wheels which are connected by intermediate idler annular gear-wheels. The depth of immersion of the propeller may also be regulated. The upper casing comprises a housing formed of two concentric parts 18, 20 adapted to swivel one on the other and having trunnions 16, 17 mounted in bearings 15 on the supporting frame. The part 18 is formed with a depending tubular portion 19 and the part 20 is formed with bearing bosses 21 and 29 at right angles to its axis. From the part 19 is supported a tubular casing 25 for the transmission shaft 60 and it in turn supports the casing 23 of the propeller gears. This casing 23 carries a skeg 26 which when it strikes the water is adapted to swing the outboard installation on the trunnions 16, 17. When the installation is locked by a pin 32 this has to be sheared before tilting can take place. The casing 25 is adjustable in the tube 19 for regulating the depth of immersion and the transmission shaft 60 is accordingly formed in two parts with the sliding stepped connecting faces 61. Transmission in the upper gear box from the engine shaft 50 is by means of a bevel 43 acting on an idler bevel 40 and thence on a bevel 53. The gearing in the propeller box is constituted by the bevel 70, idler 65 and bevel 67. In one form the driving-engine shaft carries two free bevels which mesh with opposite diameters of the main bevel 40 and between them is a splined sliding claw-coupling for engaging one or other. This clutch member in the middle position provides a neutral position. The yoke 100 is employed for rotating the tube 25, thus providing for steering.
