Abstract

345,054. Motor driving-arrangements. BLICK, E. L. and AUTOMATIC SCALE CO., Ltd., Broadheath, Altrincham, Cheshire. Feb. 21, 1930, Nos. 5799 and 6652. [Class 35.] A power unit for driving machinery, particularly baconslicing machines, comprises an electric driving motor attached to the underside of a worm reductiongear casing provided with means to prevent displacement of the unit relatively to the driven machine, in which the reduction gear is so arranged that the hub of the worm wheel, which is located above the worm, is extended through the side of the gear casing in a direction at right-angles to the worm and motor shafts, to form a socket member to engage the shaft or other revoluble element of the machine to be driven. In the form shown, the worm 2 and worm wheel 3 are mounted in the casing 4, 4a attached to the motor 1, and the worm wheel has a tubular extension 16 which engages the shaft 14 of the driven machine to which it is locked by one or more set-screws 17. A pulley 6 mounted on a portion of the worm shaft 7 projecting from the housing 4 transmits power to the worm from the motor pulley 8 which is associated with a handoperated clutch. These pulleys and the belt may be enclosed in a guard, and a starting switch may be incorporated in the unit. The belt drive to the worm shaft may be replaced by a chain or bevel gearing, and a clutch or coupling may be interposed between the worm wheel hub and machine shaft. To prevent angular displacement of the unit, a rod 18 which extends loosely through the extension 4a of the housing, is provided with arms 19 which are pressed on to the supporting surface 21 by screwing down the stud 22 on to a projection 23 on the rod 18. As an alternative, the clamping arrangement may comprise rods projecting from the unit housing which are locked in corresponding lugs or sockets on the frame of the driven machine.
