Abstract
344,823. Ships' hatches. REITH, R. B., 6, Coates Crescent, Edinburgh. Dec. 11, 1929, No. 37965. [Class 113 (i).] In ships' hatches in which the hatch bridles or webs extend at intervals across the hatch and are removable, the hatch webs are longer than the width of the hatch way, each end being housed in a recess or channel which is outside or extends laterally outwardly from the hatchway. The hatch croming plate 12 is cut at each position for receiving a bridle or web 13 and the opening 14 in the coaming is covered by vertical channel 15 which may be a casting or rolled-steel section. The channel 15 is secured to the outside of the plate and is adapted to receive and house the end of the extended hatch 13. The raised bar 16 which supports the cover 21 is similarly cut to allow of the web being put in place or removed therefrom vertically. An outer plate 19 running the length of the hatch may be disposed outside the channels 15 so that the tarpaulin 22 may come down flush the whole length of the side, or the spaces between the channels 15 may be filled with wood for the same purpose. For between deck hatches a slot 14 is cut in the coaming 12 and angle plates 29 supported by an intermediate bracket 30 are provided for housing the ends of the beam 13 as before. In a modification, the main coaming 12 carries above it a flanged coaming 32 laterally and outwardly disposed and which is joggled or provided with housing brackets to take the ends of the beams 13.
