Abstract
344,800. Yarnwinding machines. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO., 95, South Street, Boston, U.S.A. -(Assignees of Jones, C. H.; 10, Sanford Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) Dec. 10, 1929, No. 37926. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1929. [Class 120 (ii).] In a winding-machine the thread-guide can only be uncoupled from the traversing- device when it is intermediate of the ends of the cop or package, thereby preventing strands of silk, rayon, &c. slipping over the end of the cop &c. being wound, means being included such that when a predetermined size is reached or when the yarn &c. breaks the thread-guide is uncoupled, and with drum winding-machines the driving drum is declutched and braked, outward movement of the cop support from the drum being utilized, progressively to reduce the stroke of the thread-guide to form cops which are conical at both ends, and to maintain the thread-guide close to but out of contact with the cop thus avoiding chafing &c. The cop C, Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted on a core of wood, fibre, &c. T the ends of which carry gudgeon pins 48 having flanges 49 and engaging grooved pins 58 in sleeves 57 at the ends of the arms 51 of a frame 50 pivoted on a rod 27, the pins 48 being snapped into the grooves and held therein by spring clips 60, 63, 64, Fig. 2, having stops 65. The traverse bar 15, extending the length of the machine for several winding units has a crosshead 14, Fig. 1, which slides in grooves &c. 16, and carries a cam bowl 20 engaging a helical groove 9 of the traverse cam 3, the bar 15 being notched to engage a horizontal rod 100 at the lower end of an arm 90 which is looped round a pin 93 on which it oscillates to traverse the thread-guide 70. To uncouple the guide 70 from the traverse bar 15, a lever 105 having a lug 126, Fig. 2, engaged by a lug 127 on a lever 120, and having an upper rounded edge III for raising the rod 100 is released and is moved upwards about its pivot 27 by a spring 107, the shape and position of the edge 111, together with guard rods 115 above the bar 15 ensure disengagement of the rod 100 intermediately of the extremes of its throw. The drum 10 is mounted freelv on lubricant-impregnated bushings 36, Fig. 6, and has a clutch 40 fast to the drum shaft 6 and surrounding part of the hub 35 of the drum, in a radial bore of which is contained a weight or steel ball 45 maintained in engagement with the sides of an aperture 47 in the clutch 40, disengagement being effected by a lug 125 on the lever 120 contacting with the protruding part of the ball 45 whilst a brake shoe 121 contacts with the hub 35 under the action of a spring 122. A detent lever 128, Fig. 2, pivoted at 108 and having a catch 129 engages an edge of a lug 130 on the lever 120 to hold it in inoperative position during winding into which position it, and its connected lever 105 are depressed by a lever 145, pivoted at 146 and having a handle 148, a lug 149 engaging the lever 120. A lever 150 also pivoted at 146 having an arcuate face 151 engages a quadrant 152 fastened to one of the arms 51 of the frame 50, until as the latter rises during winding, the face 151 slips off the end of the quadrant 152 a spring 156 then moves the lever 150 to the right and lifts the starting lever 145 by the pin 155 which also lifts a knock-off lever 135 causing it to engage with teeth 136 on the clutch 40, and to move to the right to release the detent lever 128 from the lug 130. The release may also be effected by a wire 140 acted on by a drop-wire actuated by breakage of the yarn &c. y. The arrangement of levers &c. is such that the thread-guide 70 is disconnected and stopped slightly before the drum stops rotating, thus avoiding strain on the yarn &c. y. The cop remains in contact with the drum when stopped thus preventing windings slipping out of place. The thread-guide 70 preferably of sheet metal having guide-eyes 81, 83 has fixed to it a slotted plate 85 engaging a rod 87 extending between the arms 51, thus as the frame 50 rises on its pivot 27 owing to the growth of the cop, it raises the threadguide, on a guide-rod 75 on which it is mounted to pivot and slide, over an arcuate leg 96 on the arm 90 thus maintaining the guide out of contact with the cop and progressively reducing the traverse of the thread-guide owing to its engaging the oscillating arm 90 nearer its pivot pin 93.
