Abstract

For the production of acetaldehyde alone or mixed with acetic acid from acetylene and steam, there may be used a catalyst prepared by mixing equivalent quantities of solutions of ammonium molybdate and bismuth nitrate and adding ammonia, the precipitated bismuth ammonium molybdate being dried, formed into pellets, and heated to 350 DEG C. to expel the ammonia. Specification 332,635, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], is referred to.ALSO:Acetaldehyde alone or in admixture with acetic acid is obtained by passing a mixture of acetylene and steam over a bismuth compound, which may be supported upon a carrier. Preferably a phosphate or molybdate of bismuth is employed, and the steam is used in large excess such as 2 to 10 times the volume of the acetylene. In an example, equivalent quantities of ammonium molybdate and bismuth nitrate solutions are mixed, and ammonia is added to precipitate bismuth ammonium molybdate, which is dried, formed into pellets, and heated to 350 DEG C. to expel the ammonia. A mixture of acetylene with seven times its volume of steam is passed over this catalyst at 300 DEG C. Specification 332,635, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
