Abstract

A refractory material is prepared as in the parent Specification by melting together oxides of magnesium, aluminium, chromium and silicon but in which the proportions are so controlled that the tripled sum of the percentages of silicon oxide and iron oxide with the excess of aluminium oxide over chromium oxide or preferably over half the chromium oxide does not exceed 60. Where the aluminium oxide does not exceed the chromium oxide the computation is made with respect to the silica and the iron oxide alone. Preferably the percentages of the oxides of magnesium, aluminium, and chromium together amount to 80 per cent or more; the aluminium oxide lies between 10 and 25 per cent; the percentage of chromium oxide is less than twice that of the aluminium oxide; and the percentage of iron oxide is less than 5 per cent.
